New to Graphic Organizers

This week I made my first graphic organizer and I wanted to share both the joys and trials of the experience. I really enjoyed designing, creating and formatting the whole thing. I used power point for the design, partially because it has good features and partially because its a program I know well. My difficulty was that power point made it difficult to manuver whole pieces instead of just individual pieces. I also found it hard to reduce my explanations to one page. There is just so much to say about the awesome subject of science!! Anyway, I hope that you all have enjoyable experiences with making graphic organizers...they really are a neat teaching tool.

  1. Designing a graphic organizer was fun. I built mine using Inspiration (I am using the 30 day trial) and it was really easy. I was able to not only build a cool web, but easily integrate photos. Also, had my roomates try to fill it in, and that was really useful because they found a few errors that I had missed!

I feel like I have to make a bunch of graphic organizers and save them on my pc before my inspiration trial runs out!

  2. I was in a similar situation as you, designing mine on powerpoint. My main constraint was that the powerpoint slide is a bit too small and so I couldn't spread out my data as much as I'd have liked. After designing, I realized that I could have made it on Word :)

  3. Word isn't much easier. Formatting it is a bit of a nightmare actually.

  4. Oh is that so? I'm glad you informed me because I was going to switch to Word from now on for my graphic orgs. Thanks !

  5. You could always give it a try for the sake of personal preference, but it took me hours to format it properly, and goodness knows you can't change anything easily. Was it the formatting or the space that most bothered you with ppt?

  6. Well, in my case, space was the major constraint because I found that the final product was pretty crammed. Since my slide was full, there was no place for the word bank or the SOL statement. So I opened Word and inserted the slide (as an object) into Word. There was more than enough room for my word bank and the SOL.
But, I must admit - powerpoint was simple and great to work with, and I didn't have any probelm in formatting.
I guess in general I learnt that working with powerpoint for shapes/flowcharts, and then inserting it into Word for text, is a nice way to go about things.

  7. I have never inserted a powerpoint slide into Word. Is this a difficult thing to do?

  8. It's very simple. You have to insert it as an 'object' in Word. I too didn't know this.. found it online
